What you need to know!

HAEi Youngsters and their HAE Member Organization must apply to HAEi LEAP together.
Each youngster needs to complete an individual application form.
A Member Organization can complete one application form for up to 4 prospective students.

As an HAEi Youngster, you must want to join and commit your time to the program and have spoken to your HAE organization to understand what sort of project you can work on upon graduation from HAEi LEAP.

As an HAEi Member Organization, you’ll have spoken to your youngster about undertaking the program, have time to commit to supporting your youngster, and spoken to them about a project you think they can work on post-graduation.

General requirements

Youngsters need to be:

between 16 and 25 years old by application close (12 November 2023)
a young HAE patient, caregiver, or family member
member of your national HAE organization
able to travel independently
able to communicate in English

Expected time commitment from youngsters:

In-person meeting – 4 days (including travel) mid-April 2024
Online education – 2-3 hours per week from April 1 to w/c July 1, 2024
Project with Member Organization – 2-3 hours per week
Completing online evaluation surveys – to help us get better in future

Expected time commitment from Member Organization:

Member Organizations will be expected to actively support and guide the youngsters when choosing and agreeing on a project to be carried out
Once the project has started, Member Organizations will need to set up regular check-ins with the youngsters to ensure they are comfortable with the tasks
Member Organizations will be expected to join 2-4 check-in meetings with the youngster and HAEi team members
Completing an online evaluation survey – to help us get better in future

Language

English is the language of HAEi LEAP.

Timings

2023
Beginning of October – applications open.
Sunday 12 November, 11.00pm CET – applications close.
Start of December – all applicants will be contacted, and successful applicants will have their places confirmed.
Before Christmas – successful application complete online registration for LEAP 2024.

2024
April 1, 2024 – LEAP students get online at HAEi Advocacy Academy
April 17-21 – in-person kick-off meeting in Dubai
April 29 – July 1 – online education, including open/check-in weeks
W/c July 1 – final presentations (Zoom)

Graduation and the project

HAEi LEAP students will also be paving their own way to make great things happen for them as individuals. HAEi will support successful graduates with a certificate of achievement and a letter of recommendation that they can use to help with their CV or applications to schools and jobs, for example.

To help you deliver the project, HAEi will provide a one-time monetary grant to HAEi LEAP graduates and their Member Organizations.

Important travel information

For HAEi LEAP Students traveling to and from the 3-day in-person seminar, it is extremely important that:

1. Students travel with a sufficient quantity of HAE medication to cover their needs while they are away from home

2. Students can administer their prescribed therapy

3. Students have adequate travel insurance, that also covers COVID-19. This is a mandatory requirement when traveling for the 3-day in-person seminar. Students will be traveling to a foreign country with a health care system that likely is very different to their home country. There is no guarantee that hospitals have HAE medication on hand to treat an attack. Also, Students may be required to pay for any emergency care or hospital visit.

4. HAEi is demanding that Students, as a participant, are fully vaccinated according to the requirements in your country. Furthermore, is it your responsibility to be updated on the travel regulations regarding COVID-19, from the airline company, from your country, in transit countries if required, and the destination country. There will be no emergency care or HAE medication available at the seminar venue.

Neither HAEi nor any HAEi Member Organizations can assume liability or be expected to provide medical care of any nature (HAE, Coronavirus, regular flu, etc.) if you experience problems during your stay in the workshop country or while traveling.
